About Us

The Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital includes rotations at 3 distinctive training institutions, which happen to be geographically contiguous on the same medical campus. This includes Jackson Memorial Hospital (a public hospital for the residents of Miami-Dade County), the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the University of Miami Hospital (a private, university-based facility). Each institution offers exposure to a unique patient population covering a vast array of cardiovascular pathology.

The core training program includes supervised experience in a variety of disciplines needed to develop a well-rounded specialist in cardiovascular medicine. Fellows participate in both inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular consultation along with the care of critically ill cardiovascular patients, including post-operative management of cardiovascular surgical patients. Exposure to the cardiovascular subspecialties including interventional cardiology, clinical electrophysiology, heart failure/cardiac transplantation, and cardiovascular imaging also form a robust portion of fellow education. During the last year of this 3-year program, elective time for further experience in areas of special interest is encouraged.

Fellows receive proficient training in electrocardiography (including ambulatory monitoring), stress testing, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, advanced cardiovasc ular imaging, and diagnostic cardiac catheterization to mention a few. Additionally, fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in scholarly activities that range from clinical, translational, or basic science research to case reports/series, book chapters, or national presentations. For fellows targeting an academic career that includes an investigative focus, an additional year of research experience can be arranged in conjunction with any of the numerous scientific mentors in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. The mission of the cardiovascular training program is to select, train and develop academic cardiovascular medicine faculty in support of the mission of academic excellence of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the mission of service of the Jackson Health System, the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, and the University of Miami Hospital.
